남들이 모두 “사자”는 매수 열풍에 있을 때 우리는 다른 선택을 할 수 있을까? 이상하게도 우리는 늘 비쌀 때 사서 쌀 때 팔게 된다. ‘쌀 때 사서 비쌀 때 판다’는 황금률을 분명히 알고 있는데 결과는 왜 이럴까. 이런 이들에게 심리적 함정을 보여주고 새로운 투자전략을 주는 책 『데이비드 드레먼의 역발상 투자』가 그의 책으로는 유일하게 출간되어 화제다. 또한 지금까지 자세히 알지 못했던 그의 “투자원칙 41가지”를 간략하게 소개하여 관심을 불러모으고 있다. 아무도 보지 않는 주식으로 큰 수익을 내는 역발상의 달인, 데이비드 드레먼은 책에서 “최고 주식과 최악 주식에는 과대 평가와 과소 평가가 따른다”고 말한다. 말인즉 기대주와 성과주는 이미 고평가 되어 있어 거꾸로 저평가된 주식을 사야 한다는 말이다. 첨단 분석으로 연구한 과거 데이터가 이를 증명하지만 우리는 알고 있는 것과 달리, 실제 투자 행동에 들어가면 언제나 너도 나도 사는 열풍에서 자유롭지 못하다. 군중심리에 휩쓸리는 것, 이런 치명적 투자심리가 함정이라는 것, 따라서 늘 군중과 다르게 움직여야 한다는 이론이 역발상이다. 그의 이론은 자신만의 눈으로 종목을 발굴하는 절대적인 원칙과 시장의 움직임에 따라 상대적인 심리이론에 바탕한, 절대적이고도 상대적인 투자이론이다.
데이비드 드레먼, 그는 누구인가
데이비드 드레먼은 대부분의 월스트리트 리서치를 가치없는 것으로 취급하여 투자정보는 받아들이되 추천리스트는 쓰레기통에 버리라고 말한다. 그는 사람들이 고가의 기술주와 인터넷주를 살 때 ‘역사상 최대로 거품이 빠져있다’며 전통적인 굴뚝주를 사 이목을 끌었다. 이렇게 그는 군중과 다르게 움직이는 것처럼 보인다. 대부분 그는 시장을 이겨 큰 수익을 거머줬는데 이것이 드레먼을 현역 최고의 역발상 투자자로 부르는 이유다.
그는 ‘역발상’이라는 투자철학과 신념을 펼치기 위해 책을 썼는데, 1977년 『심리와 주식시장』을 필두로 1980년 『역발상 투자전략』, 1982년 『새로운 역발상 투자전략』 1988년 『미래세대를 위한 역발상 투자전략(원제)』를 펴냈다 (『데이비드 드레먼의 역발상 투자』는 1988년에 쓴 그의 마지막 책을 번역했다). 이처럼 그는 거의 30년 넘...(하략)

Purdue's undergrad engineering ranked in top 10 nationally
Purdue's College of Engineering tied for eighth nationally among doctoral-granting public universities, sharing the slot with Carnegie Mellon University. Purdue ranked No. 10 in 2002 and has been in the No. 8 position for the past two years. The top-ranked engineering undergraduate doctoral degree-granting university among all public and private institutions was the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Stanford University and the University of California-Berkeley were tied for second in the poll. "Purdue's College of Engineering has a longstanding commitment to undergraduate education," said Leah Jamieson, who was named the John A. Edwardson Dean of Engineering on Aug. 2, pending approval by the Purdue board of trustees. "To be ranked among the top 10 speaks volumes about the dedication and hard work of our faculty and staff." Purdue's engineering specialties ranked as follows: • Industrial/manufacturing engineering, No. 2. • Agricultural engineering, No. 4. • Aerospace/aeronautical/astronomical, No. 4. • Civil engineering, No. 7. • Mechanical engineering, No. 7. • Electrical engineering, No. 9. • Computer engineering, No. 11. • Materials engineering, No. 13 (tied with University of California-Santa Barbara). • Chemical engineering, No. 13. •The nuclear engineering specialty is ranked every other year. In last year's rankings, nuclear engineering was No. 4 (tied with University of California-Berkeley and the University of Michigan). "We are continuing our commitment to education through our curriculum reform initiative," Jamieson said. "Called Purdue's Future Engineer, the initiative is looking at the broad range of attributes and skills that our students will need for 21st century careers." In the past five years, the College of Engineering has opened new education and research facilities, such as the Robert L. and Terry L. Bowen Laboratory for Large-Scale Civil Engineering Research and Forney Hall of Chemical Engineering, and developed initiatives, such as the Department of Engineering Education and a new division for environmental and ecological engineering. The College of Engineering is made up of 11 schools and departments: aeronautics and astronautics, agricultural and biological, biomedical, chemical, civil, electrical and computer, engineering education, industrial, materials, mechanical, and nuclear. The college includes the divisions of engineering professional education, construction engineering and management, and environmental and ecological engineering. Also, the college houses programs such as Engineering Projects in Community Service, the Minority Engineering Program, the Women in Engineering Program and the Indiana Space Grant Consortium. In addition to the more than 6,400 undergraduate students, the college enrolls more than 2,200 graduate students. U.S.News & World Report ranked Purdue's College of Engineering graduate program No. 6 in the nation last April. Purdue University-Calumet was tied for No. 36 for best undergraduate engineering programs at institutions whose highest degree is a bachelor's or master's. In the magazine's other rankings, Purdue's overall undergraduate programs tied with the University of Iowa for No. 25 nationally among public doctoral degree-granting universities. Purdue tied at No. 64, along with the University of Iowa and Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts, among both private and public universities. Purdue also is among 13 public and private universities cited for its internship programs in the "Programs to Look For" category. The Krannert School of Management tied for 18th in the nation with four other doctoral-granting universities — Ohio State University, Pennsylvania State University, the University of Arizona and the University of Maryland. The Krannert School tied for 10th among business schools at public universities. In specialty rankings, Krannert's production/operations management placed No. 2 and was the top-ranked public university, and in quantitative analysis ranked No. 3 and also was the top-ranked public university. In addition, Purdue North Central is listed as one of the top comprehensive colleges in the Midwest in the "Comprehensive Colleges-Bachlelor's" rankings, which evaluates institutions that focus on undergraduate education and offer a wide range of programs. The campus also is cited as having one of the lowest student debt loads of any public or private comprehensive college in the Midwest. The data for determining the nation's best institutions of higher education come from questionnaires sent to all accredited four-year colleges and universities. The magazine then determines its rankings based on several measures that fall into seven broad categories: peer assessment, retention, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, alumni giving and graduation rate. The magazine bases its specialty rankings on ratings by deans and senior faculty in those disciplines at peer institutions. 새벽 여섯 시. 뉴질랜드 오클랜드에 사는 ‘기러기 엄마’ 백승숙 씨의 하루가 시작하는 시간이다. 그가 일어나서 처음 하는 일은 TV 아침뉴스를 시청하는 일.
백 씨가 아침뉴스를 듣기 위해서 새벽같이 일어나는 데에는 이유가 있다. 뉴스를 열심히 듣다 보면 영어 청취력이 높아질 뿐만 아니라 현지 사정에 밝아질 수 있기 때문. 뉴질랜드는 한국과는 달리 뉴스 방영 횟수가 적기 때문에 이렇게 새벽같이 요란을 떨어야 그나마 뉴스 시청을 빠트리지 않을 수 있다. 아침뉴스가 끝나는 7시가 되면 백 씨는 아들 형준이의 아침식사와 도시락 준비로 분주해진다. 학교 급식이 없는 뉴질랜드에서 도시락 싸는 일은 학부모의 최우선 과제. 오전 간식 시간에 먹을 군것질거리까지 챙기다 보면 백 씨가 챙겨야 하는 도시락 양은 어느새 한 보따리가 된다. 처음 뉴질랜드에 왔을 때에는 등산배낭만큼 큰 학생가방이 이해가 되지 않았는데 이제야 그 이유를 알 것 같다. 새벽부터 자정까지 눈코 뜰 새 없이 바쁜 생활 올바른 선택이었는지 고민 늘어
3시 30분이면 집에 돌아와 형준이를 학원에 보낸다. 한국처럼 학원버스가 아이들을 데려다 주지 않기 때문에 모두 백 씨의 몫이다. 뉴질랜드에 5년 전 유학을 온 형준이는 영어, 수학, 에세이 과목 과외를 받고 있다. 아이를 학원에 데려다 준 다음, 백 씨는 다시 교회로 향한다. 교회 한편을 빌려 아이들의 미술을 지도하고 있기 때문이다. 미술 지도를 마치면 저녁식사 준비를 위해 장을 보고 6시께 집에 돌아온다. 형준이 숙제를 챙기고 다음날 자신이 들을 영어 수업 준비를 하다보면 자정을 넘기기 일쑤다. ‘기러기 엄마’의 피곤한 하루. 본인이 스스로 선택한 길이지만 백씨는 지금도 가끔 조기유학의 길이 과연 올바른 선택이었는지 고민을 할 때가 있다. 사춘기 자녀와 갈등…남편 빈자리 실감 백 씨는 5년 전 당시 아홉 살이었던 형준이와 뉴질랜드에 온 ‘기러기 엄마’다. 백 씨는 최근 형준이 때문에 스트레스가 이만저만이 아니다. 사춘기가 된 형준이와 사사건건 부딪히면서 싸우는 일이 잦아졌기 때문이다. 얼마 전 친구와 놀러 나간 형준이는 휴대전화 연락도 끊은 채 밤늦게까지 돌아오지 않았다. 백 씨는 형준이에게 왜 이렇게 귀가가 늦었느냐고 다그쳤지만 형준이는 엄마가 지나치게 간섭한다며 화를 냈다. 이런 일이 있을 때마다 백 씨는 남편의 빈자리가 더욱 크게 느껴진다. 아들이 보이는 거친 행동과 낯선 이국 문화가 백 씨를 이중으로 힘들게 한다. ‘이럴 때 남편이 있었더라면….’ 백 씨는 요즘 뉴질랜드 생활을 계속 해야 하는지 회의를 느끼고 있다. 자녀교육 문제뿐만 아니라 연말이나 명절, 집안 대소사 일을 처리할 때면 백 씨는 어김없이 ‘남편의 부재’를 실감하게 된다. 체류기간이 길어지면서 부부 관계도 점점 거리감이 커지는 것 같다. ‘아이를 위해 내 삶을 잃어버린 것은 아닐까?’ 백 씨의 고민은 깊어간다. ‘기러기 엄마’ 부적응이 더 문제되기도 언어 문제로 인한 해프닝 비일비재
김 씨가 처음 소연이의 뉴질랜드 유학을 결심하게 된 것은 학교생활에 잘 적응하지 못하는 딸아이를 위해서였다. 다행히 소연이는 뉴질랜드 학교생활을 잘 따라가고 있지만 정작 김 씨 자신이 언어 문제로 많은 어려움을 겪고 있다. 김 씨가 언어문제로 가장 답답해할 때는 소연이 담임선생님과 상담을 할 때다. 소연이가 한국에서 겪었던 어려움을 설명하고 선생님에게 각별한 관심을 부탁하고 싶지만 영어 표현력이 부족해 번번이 입을 다물어야 했다. 잔병치레가 많은 소연이 때문에 병원에도 자주 가지만 제대로 증세를 설명하기도 힘들다. 주변 사람의 도움을 받기도 하고 사전을 들고 다녀보기도 하지만 김 씨의 ‘말 못하는 서러움’은 쉽게 해결되지 않는다. 뉴질랜드에 처음 왔을 때에는 이런 일도 있었다. 당시 김 씨는 신년 예배를 마치고 자정이 조금 넘은 시간에 집으로 오는 길이었다. 집에 도착하기 직전 김 씨는 음주운전단속 중인 경찰과 마주쳤다. 단속 경찰이 뭐라고 말을 했지만 김 씨는 그것을 알아들을 수 없었다. 한국처럼 음주운전 단속이겠거니 생각한 김 씨는 경찰을 향해 ‘후~’하고 입김을 불었다. 하지만 경찰은 계속 무엇인가를 요구했고 김 씨는 그때마다 다시 입김을 힘차게 불었다. 그러기를 수차례. 결국 단속 경찰은 한참 웃음을 터트린 후에야 김 씨를 보내주었다고 한다. 나중에 알고 보니 뉴질랜드에서는 음주단속 시에 입김을 불라고 하지 않는다는 것이었다. 대신 운전자에게 이름과 주소를 빠르게 말해보라고 지시한다고 한다. 언어 문제는 ‘기러기 엄마’들을 웃게도 울게도 만드는 장벽이 되곤 한다. 비싼 교육비?생활비 감당하기 어려워 ‘이기적인 며느리’로 찍힐까 집안 식구 눈치도 먼 외국까지 유학을 온 만큼 아이에게 이것저것 시키고 싶지만 비용이 만만치 않은 게 문제다. 14세 이하의 어린이를 집에 혼자 두는 것은 위법이기 때문에 어디든 자녀와 동반하거나 아이 돌봐주는 사람을 구해야 하는 것도 부담이다. 경제적인 부담뿐만 아니라 각종 집안 행사에서 소외되는 것도 ‘기러기 엄마’를 힘들게 하는 부분이다. ‘기러기 엄마’는 집안일에는 소홀하면서 자기 자식만 챙기는 이기적인 며느리, 시누이, 동서로 눈치를 받기 쉽다. 이런 ‘기러기 엄마’를 옆에서 지켜보는 어린 자녀들도 힘들기는 마찬가지다. 백 씨의 아들 형준이는 “엄마가 힘들어 하는 것을 볼 때마다 마음이 아파요”라고 말하며 “엄마한테도 잘하고 공부도 잘하고 싶지만 그게 쉬운 게 아니거든요”라고 말한다. 형준이는 “특히 에세이 쓰기 같이 어려운 숙제가 있으면 한국에 돌아가고 싶다”며 “아빠랑 같이 운동하는 친구들을 보면 아빠가 함께 있었으면 좋겠다는 생각이 많이 들어요”라고 말했다. ‘기러기 엄마’들은 보통 유학을 온 지 1~2년 동안이 가장 힘들다고 입을 모은다. “처음엔 전화로 남편한테 울고불고했어요. 왜 나를 여기로 보냈느냐고요.” 백 씨의 이야기다. 현지 생활이 4~5년이 넘은 ‘베테랑’ 기러기 엄마들은 자녀들의 조기유학이 성공하기 위해서는 먼저 엄마가 현지생활에 빠르게 적응하는 게 필요하다고 조언한다. 김일순 뉴질랜드 통신원 |
