Youth means a temperamental
predominance of courage
over timidity of the appetite, for
adventure over the love of ease.
This often exists in a man of sixty
more than a body of twenty.
Nobody grows old merely by a number
of years.
We grow old by deserting our ideals.
젊음은 용기의 기질적인 우세를 의미한다.
식욕의 소심함과 안일함을 좋아하는 것을 넘어서 모험에 대하여서는.
이것은 종종 60세 남성에게 존재한다, 20세 육체 보다는.
나이만 먹는다고 늙는 사람은 없다.
우리의 이상을 버릴 때 우리는 늙는다.
Years may wrinkle the skin, but to
give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.
Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to
dust.
세월은 피부에 주름살을 만들지 모르지만, 열정을 포기하면 영혼에 주름살이 생긴다.
걱정, 두려움, 자기 불신은 마음을 굴복시키고 영혼을 먼지로 되돌려 놓는다.
Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in
every human being's heart
the lure of wonder, the unfailing
child-like appetite of what's next,
and the joy of the game of
living.
칠십이든 열 여섯이든 모든 인간의 마음속에는 있지.
경이로운 것에 대한 유혹, 그 다음이 무엇일까 하는 것에 대한 끊임없는 아이 같은 식욕.
그리고 삶 속의 게임을 즐기는 일이지.
In the center of your heart and my
heart, there is a wireless station;
so long as it receives messages of
beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the Infinite, so long
are you young.
여러분의 마음과 제 마음 한 복판엔 무선국이 있지,
아름답고, 희망의, 응원의, 용기의 그리고 인간으로부터 또 조물주로부터 메시지를 받는 한, 여러분은 젊은 것이다.
When the aerials are down, and your
spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are
grown old, even at twenty, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch the
waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at eighty.
소통의 안테나가 무너지고, 여러분의 영혼이 냉소의 눈과 비관주의의 얼음으로 뒤덮일 때, 여러분은 스무 살에도 늙게 되지만 낙관주의의 물결을 잡기 위해, 안테나가 바로 서는 한, 여러분은 80세에 젊게 죽을지도 모릅니다.
