“예전에는 저처럼 늦게까지 결혼도 안 하고 싱글로 살면 손가락질 받는 시대였지만, 지금은 세상이 많이 변했다고 생각했어요. 그런데 얼마 전에 회사에 면접을 보러 갔는데 제 이력서를 살펴보더니 다짜고짜 ‘이혼했냐’라고 물어보는 거예요. ‘와우’하는 기분이 들었죠. 아직도 별로 변한 게 없더라고요. 그래서 요즘은 어떻게 그런 고정관념을 바꿀 수 있을까에 대해 고민을 많이 해요.”

“In the past, you’d get pointed out if you didn’t get married and lived single until later in life like me. These days, I thought much of that world has changed. But not long ago, I went to an office for an interview. While they were looking over my resume, I was suddenly asked if I was divorced. I just thought, ‘Wow.’ Things haven’t changed so much after all. So now, I think a lot about how we’ll be able to change those kinds of stereotypes.”

“18학번이에요. 과대도 하면서 되게 열심히 다니고 있어요.”
“대학생이 되니 어때요?”
“음… 술을 많이 먹고요, 술을 많이 먹었어요. 아직까지는 술 먹는 것 밖에 못 배웠네요.”

“I started university this year. I’ve been working hard at school, and I’ve even become our grade’s department representative.”
“How is it now that you’re in university?”
“Umm… I drink a lot… I’ve drunk a lot. The only thing I have learned so far is how to drink.”

“나이를 먹는다는 건, 나 혼자 할 수 있는 게 생각보다 적다는 걸 알게 되는 거예요.”

“‘Growing older’ means learning that the number of things I can do by myself is fewer than I thought.”

“슈퍼마켓 장사를 40년 해서 애들 대학, 시집 다 보내고 요즘은 쉬고 있어요. 그때는 밤낮 모르고 가게에 처박혀 있느라 이렇게 환한 세상을 몰랐어요. 맨날 아침에는 애들 챙기고, 눈만 뜨면 가게 가서 밤늦게 들어오고 그랬으니까. 묶여 있었죠, 사람이. 요즘에는 공원에서 운동하면서 하늘을 이렇게 쳐다보면, 와, 이렇게 좋은 세상도 있었구나, 내가 그걸 모르고 살았구나, 하는 생각이 막 나더라고요. 이렇게 강도 바라보고, 산에 가서 나무 푸릇푸릇한 데 앉아 있으면 마음이 편안해져요. 좋아요, 그래서.”

“After working in a store business for forty years, I put my kids through college, married them off and am not working anymore. I spent my time cramped in a store not knowing night from day and didn’t quite know this bright world. Because every morning, I took care of my kids and then went to the store to work as soon as they shut their eyes. I was stuck. These days I watch the sky while working out in the park and think, ‘Wow. This kind of good world exists, too. I lived without even knowing it.’ It’s comforting to watch the river or to sit and take in the lush views of the mountains. Things are good like this.”

“(남자) 요새 제가 건축에 흥미를 느껴서, 우리나라에 좋은 건축물들을 찾아다니면서 사진을 찍고 사진첩을 만드는 작업을 하고 있어요. 제ㅡ 직업은 아니고, 그냥 혼자만의 과제라고 할까요?”
“그런 건축물들의 가치를 보기 위해서 사진첩을 만들게 되신 거에요?”
“(남자) 아무래도 영감을 얻기 위한 게 가장 큰 것 같아요. 제가 디자인으로 먹고 사는 사람이라서요. 지금은 제품 디자인을 하고 있지만 사진을 찍고, 그 사진으로 책을 만드는 편집디자인을 하는 것도 배워보고 싶었거든요. 그런데 마음만 갖고 있으면 마음에서 그칠 것 같았어요. 실행에 옮겨야 실력도 늘고 다음 단계로 갈 수 있을 것 같아서 해봤어요.”

“(Man) Lately, I’m really into architecture, so I’ve been taking photos of cool buildings around Korea and compiling them into a photography book. It’s not my job, but you might call it my own personal assignment.”
“Did you start making this book to show the beauty of these buildings?”
“(Man) For me, the biggest reason is to find inspiration. My entire livelihood is designing. Right now I’m working as a product designer, but I’ve also wanted to learn how to create and design books from the pictures I’ve taken. I knew, though, that just wanting won’t make things happen. So, I acted. I knew I could improve my skills and reach a higher level only after doing so.”

“저는 딸만 둘이에요. 딸들이 잘해주기는 하는데, 모여도 집에 왔다가 후딱 가니까. 아이고, 왔다가 가는 그 뒷모습이요, 얼마나 서운한지 몰라요. 이건 딸들 가진 엄마들 밖에 모를거야. 안 보일 때까지 쳐다보려니까…”

“I’ve got two children, both daughters. They are indeed good to me, but whenever we all get together at the house, they come and leave in a flash. Oh, the sight of their backs as they leave me… you’ve got no idea how sad it makes me. A feeling that only mothers with daughters know. Because us moms watch them leave until we can’t see them anymore…”
